As part of their Katie Morag topic, Primary 1 read the story The Baking Day Secret. Katie Morag loves tasting all the baking that gets made on a Friday on the Isle of Struay. She loves the syrupy porridgies that Nurse makes.
Primary 1 all had a chance to help make porridgies. They had to wash their hands, listen carefully, take turns and keep safe when they were near the oven. The smell through the school was delicious.
If you’d like to try making them here is the recipe:
Katie Morag’s Porridgies
75g soft brown sugar
2 tablespoons syrup
200g rolled oats
Pinch of salt
- Grease the baking tray (20cm x 30cm)
- Put the butter in the pan
- Melt the butter over a low heat
- Add sugar
- Add syrup
- Add salt
- Mix well
- Add oats
- Mix well
- Spread the mixture evenly in the tray.
Bake for 25-35 mins at 110°C until golden brown. Take out of the oven and cool a bit. Mark into squares or fingers with a knife. Leave in tray till cold. Store in an airtight tin.
Katie Morag likes them best when they are still warm.
Primary 1 got to taste the porridgies in school and also took home a bag of porridgies at the end of the day. Here’s what they said about the porridgies after they’d taken them home:
