Safe Routes to School Policy

1.0 Following on from the Kippen Primary Travel Plan 2008, the following aims and objectives are to be addressed in the form of a safe parking policy;
1.1 Safety. For both pedestrians and other road users. Make the area around the school gates safer for all.
1.2 Awareness of roads and traffic legislation. Specifically aimed at parents and carers.
1.3 Environmental. Reduce emissions around the school gates, and best practices as far as pollution reduction and environmental improvements are concerned.
1.4 Health and Wellbeing.

2.0 Parent and carer awareness and education.
2.1 Parents and carers should be made aware that parking on a pavement is illegal.
2.2 Parents and carers should be made aware that parking on a zig-zag is illegal.
2.3 Parents and carers should be made aware that parking on a yellow line is illegal.
2.4 Parents and carers should be made aware that within 200m of the school, there are ample legal and safe parking spaces for every family in the school.
2.5 The whole parking area directly joining on to the school should be designated as staff parking only. This will discourage parents and carers from accessing these areas via the pavement where there are young pedestrians.

3.0 Schemes to consider
3.1 Walking Bus schemes should be explained and promoted.
3.2 Park and Stride schemes should be explained and promoted.

4.0 Benefits
4.1 Fewer parents and carers driving pupils to school, therefore fewer vehicles around the school increasing safety for both the school and local community
4.2 Fewer traffic violations around the school.
4.3 Less traffic congestion and a reduction in emissions around the school gates.
4.4 Increased health and wellbeing resulting from less emissions and more exercise.

It is essential that any person who is likely to be dropping off or picking up a pupil is informed of this new policy to ensure maximum impact of policy.
